Birthplace of James Buchanan
|
Birthplace of James Buchanan - Cove Gap, Pennsylvania is the birthplace of the 15th President of the United States, James Buchanan. A stone pyramid surrounded by tall pines marks the site of the original cabin where James Buchanan was born. The cabin is now on the grounds of Mercersburg Academy; it was moved there in 1953. Other sites of Buchanan's life include the Buchanan Boyhood home in Mercersburg, which is now named the Buchanan Hotel, the Wheatland Mansion, and the President's gravesite at Woodward Cemetery in Lancaster, Pennsylvania. |
John McFadden Model Railroad Museum

John McFadden Model Railroad Museum - Located at Mercersburg Academy, the Model Railroad Collections of the museum includes several different collections, including the John B. McFadden collection. Visitors will see items from the Lionel Train Company dating all the way back to the early 1920's. Lionel trains are modeled to resemble full-size rolling stock and are built for "O" to "O-27" scales. Several other collections are included at the museum. The museum is open most Sundays from 1 pm to 4 pm. |

Cowans Gap State Park - Encompassing 1,085 acres in the beautiful Allens Valley of Fulton County, Cowans Gap State Park provides plentiful outdoor recreation and natural beauty all year long. Visitors can enjoy picnicking near the lake, fishing for trout, bass, perch, or panfish, or swimming at the 500-foot sandy beach. Boating is also a popular activity with rowboat and paddleboat rentals. There are 10 miles of hiking trails and lots of opportunities for wildlife viewing; watch for deer, bear, box turtles, and native bird species. Winter activities include ice fishing, ice-skating, and cross-country skiing. |
